DISCOVER the Gili Islands

Which Island Is Right For You?
Gili Islands Travel Guide
The Gili Islands feel like a world of their own. Just off the coast of Lombok, these three tiny islands offer a completely different rhythm of life.
No cars, no motorbikes, no noise. Only turquoise water, white sand, and the slow, peaceful pace of island living. While they may look similar at first glance, each island has its own personality, atmosphere, and experience. Choosing the right one can shape your entire trip.
Beyond the well known trio, there are also lesser known islands scattered across the region, places I cannot wait to explore in the future. This Gili Islands Travel Guide will help you understand what makes each island unique.

One destination, many Islands

Three islands, three different vibes
Gili Islands
One of Indonesia's most beloved tropical escapes. What makes the Gilis special is how easy it is to experience all three on a single trip.
Fast boats connect the islands in just 10 to 15 minutes, so you can party one night on Trawangan, do yoga on Air the next morning, and snorkel with sea turtles on Meno in the afternoon. Expect warm water, nice coral reefs, and unforgettable sunsets over Bali’s Mount Agung in the distance.

Transportation
How to get to the Gili Islands
Reaching the Gili Islands is surprisingly easy and can be done from both Bali and Lombok by fast boat, public boat, or private speedboat. While flights are not available, the boat transfers are straightforward and well organized. Choosing a reliable operator is recommended, especially during rough sea conditions.
From Bali to the Gili Islands

Book your tickets at least a day in advance during peak season (July to August) as boats fill up fast. Public boats are cheaper but less predictable than private speedboats.
From Lombok to the Gili Islands

You may be required to pay a small tourist or harbor fee upon arrival at the Gili Islands. The charge is typically around 10,000 to 20,000 IDR per person, depending on the island, and is usually collected in cash.
The island that never sleeps
Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan, often called "Gili T," is the largest and liveliest of the three Gili Islands. It is the one where travelers come for sunset bars, live music, beach parties, and a buzzing international food scene. But do not let the party reputation fool you. Gili T offers some of the best diving in the region. It also has a quieter northern coast and the same laid-back island charm the Gilis are known for.
The main strip is always buzzing with restaurants, cocktail bars, and dive shops, while the rest of the island feels surprisingly mellow. Walk 15 minutes north from the harbor and you will find quiet stretches of sand, hammocks swaying in the breeze, and crystal clear water perfect for snorkeling. It is the kind of place where a "quick stop" turns into a week.

If you want to experience the best of Gili T without the crowds, head to the north or east side of the island where quiet beaches and turquoise water await, far from the main party strip.

The perfect balance
Gili Air
Gili Air strikes the perfect balance between the energy of Trawangan and the seclusion of Meno. It is the closest Gili island to Lombok and has a wonderful mix of local Indonesian life and traveler friendly amenities. You will find yoga shalas alongside traditional warungs, and boutique bungalows next to local family homes.
The east coast faces Lombok and has the best snorkeling, while the west coast is where you will find the sunset bars and restaurants. Despite its size, Gili Air is easy to explore on foot in about an hour, but most people slow down and take their time.

The quiet one
Gili Meno
Gili Meno is the smallest and most peaceful of the three Gili Islands. It also feels closest to a true deserted island experience. There are no beach parties here, no buzzing night markets, and no crowds. Just soft white sand, impossibly clear water, and a pace of life that makes everything else feel far away.
Gili Meno is often referred to as the "honeymoon island," and for good reason. Romantic seclusion, stunning snorkeling, and the total absence of noise create an atmosphere that feels almost impossibly serene. The famous underwater Nest statues (a circle of life sized human figures on the seabed) have become one of Indonesia's most unique snorkeling experiences. If you are looking for peace, Gili Meno is where you find it.

Gili Meno has fewer restaurants and shops than the other islands. Bring cash and stock up on essentials before arriving.
The Underwater Nest Statue
They are easy to visit and accessible for most swimmers. You can join a boat trip from Gili Air or Gili Trawangan, or, if you are staying on Gili Meno, simply swim out from the beach. The statues are only few minutes from shore.
You don’t need any diving experience to view the statues, as they are located just below the surface at a depth of around four meters. The site features 48 life size human statues arranged in a striking underwater circle.
We arrived with a private boat very early in the morning, around 5:30 AM, to avoid the massive crowds. We stayed for a while, but as the area quickly filled up, it became, trust me when I say, a human aquarium.
What not to do
Horse Carriages
Horse-drawn carts are still used on the Gili Islands, primarily for transporting goods and luggage. However, the animals are often exposed to heat, heavy loads, and long working hours. Please consider avoiding them where possible and choose to walk or use a bicycle instead, both of which are easy and enjoyable ways to get around the islands.
