THE WEATHER
Best Time to
Visit Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka enjoys great weather for most of the year, with average temperatures around 27–28°C / 81–82 °F. There are two monsoon seasons.
Dry Season
South & West Coasts + Hill Country (e.g., Galle, Mirissa, Ella, Nuwara Eliya): December to April. Best time to visit popular beach towns and the central highlands.
East & North Coasts (e.g., Trincomalee, Arugam Bay): May to September Ideal for surfing in Arugam Bay and exploring the less touristy eastern coast.
Wet Season
Southwest Monsoon (Yala) – affects South & West: May to September brings heavy rain to the west and south coasts, including Colombo, Galle, and the hill country.
Northeast Monsoon (Maha) – affects East & North: October to January affects places like Trincomalee, Jaffna, and Arugam Bay.
Best time to visit Sri Lanka:

If you’re doing a classic Sri Lanka route (Colombo → South Coast → Ella → Kandy), the best time is: December to April. But if you’re exploring the east coast, go in: May to September

What month did I travel to Sri Lanka?
I explored Sri Lanka in February: the perfect time for the south and west coasts, but I also included the east coast in our route.
Culture lives in every dish and every tradition
Sri Lankan Food, Culture, and Traditions
Culture in every flavor
Food, Culture, and Traditions

Sri Lankan food is bursting with flavor. From spicy curries and fresh seafood to tropical fruits and endless varieties of rice and sambols, it’s a full-on flavor adventure. Whether you’re grabbing a quick street snack or enjoying a home-cooked meal, it always feels like a celebration.
There are also plenty of vegetarian options, and I loved how easy it was to eat fresh and local. And of course, drinking straight from a coconut on a hot day? Pure bliss. Oh—and the tea! Sipping a cup of Ceylon up in the highlands of Ella was such a vibe.

One of the things that truly fascinated me about Sri Lanka was how many different cultures and backgrounds come together on one island. While the Sinhalese make up the majority of the population, there are also large Tamil communities and smaller groups like the Burghers, who have Portuguese and Dutch roots.
This blend makes the country feel incredibly rich and multi-layered. You can feel it in the festivals, hear it in the languages, taste it in the food, and see it in the way people dress and connect with one another. I loved how every region had its own vibe, and how welcoming and proud locals were to share their traditions.

Traditions are deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s history and daily life, from colorful festivals and vibrant rituals to the warm spirit of community gatherings. Many of these customs are influenced by religion: Buddhism shapes much of the country’s peaceful vibe with its temples and ceremonies, while Hindu traditions, especially in Tamil communities, bring energy through their striking rituals and festivals.
One of the most spectacular events is the Esala Perahera in Kandy, where parades of dancers, drummers, and beautifully decorated elephants light up the streets in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
